My new, unbroken ereader had arrived! Which means that I can get back to A Place Of Greater Safety, which I was forced to abandon half way through, not really feeling up to reading five hundred-odd pages on the screen of my phone, as excellent as those pages were. (My increasing sense of DOOM and the nowledge it would all go downhill from that point also contributed, I confess.)
Am currently at
Camille and Marat are discussing the sansculottes, after the Robespierricide chapter and directly folllowing the amazing Lucile point-of-view section where she considers Camille's death and the intensity of her feelings. (Page 520 onwards) I think it's my favourite viewpoint section so far; the prose is glorious. "Nobody had ever hinted that you could go on falling in love and falling in love, till you felt quite ill with it, spiritually sick and depleted, as if you were losing your essence day by day."
